Confessions of a Counsellor and Whistleblower: How Speaking Out Promotes Healing and Mental Health

As a counsellor and whistleblower, I share how speaking out against injustice and safeguarding failures supports healing, resilience, and mental health.

Growing Up Without a Voice

I grew up in a childhood where speaking up felt unsafe. Silence was survival, invisibility a shield. But witnessing injustice, safeguarding failures, and vulnerable people being ignored sparked a deep compulsion to act. Speaking out as a whistleblower became a moral necessity, a way to give voice to those who had none.

The Cost of Whistleblowing

Whistleblowing is not neat or glamorous. It can be exhausting, isolating, and emotionally taxing. My privacy has been invaded, my relationships tested, and there have been moments when I felt like a broken record, repeating truths the world didn’t want to hear. Yet, despite the pressure, moments of hope and purpose arise, reminding me that my voice is needed, my mission matters, and every act of speaking out has an impact.

When the System Fails

Being sectioned removes your autonomy; you must rely entirely on the system. But what if the system doesn’t work? What if the advocate is more concerned with not upsetting their bosses? What if the boss worries about losing a contract by biting the hand that feeds them? These are the realities many vulnerable people face, highlighting the urgent need for ethical advocacy, accountable safeguarding, and systemic change.

Healing Through Speaking Out

As a counsellor, I support individuals, couples, and young people navigating trauma, emotional pain, and complex life challenges. My experiences as a whistleblower and campaigner have taught me that healing from trauma isn’t just about managing pain; it’s about reclaiming your voice, standing for justice, and supporting those who are silenced. Speaking out can transform personal pain into purpose and challenge systemic injustice.

Your Voice Matters

If you are on the right side of this, everything may seem like it will work out, but our world doesn’t spin that way. Systems fail. People fall through the cracks. And yet, change is possible. Every story matters. Every voice counts. You don’t have to walk this path alone. Follow my journey, join the conversation, or reach out for trauma-informed support, mental health guidance, or advice for whistleblowers. Together, we can challenge injustice, protect the vulnerable, and create a world where silence is no longer the default.
